Jonathan was talking to me and Zhixuan (I listened more than I talked) about the elderly in Switzerland and those in Singapore. If you didn't know, Jonathan is an Eurasian who is from Switzerland, so he goes there every once in a while.
He was telling us how the elderly in Switzerland always seemed happy, and lived active lifestyles; like even in the winter he could see them "jumping about". Meanwhile, he told us how the elderly of Singapore seemed like they could die any moment if they didnt receive aid and help from the society.
Then we started going to other topics such as how liberal governments are, like how in Switzerland some drugs were sort of rationed to addicts so as to ease their lives a bit, rather than a strict ban on drugs like in Singapore. This was to reduce cases where addicts would get too desperate and resort to illegal means to procure their drugs and cause danger to the society.
Then in Holland where drugs just....fly around. Then Zhixuan mentioned that he didn't understand how people just threw their lives and futures away knowing that drugs suck, but I also mentioned that the upbringing of the people and the peers in their lives are probably the reasons why they got hooked onto drugs.
On a seperate note, I always enjoy observing conversations rather than being involved in one.
Anyway, I was looking at some anime blogs at the (little) free time I had, and I saw this post. http://that.animeblogger.net/2008/12/28/bootleg-figurines-customer-or-sellers-fault/
Essentially, the animeblogger's friend bought a fake figurine accidentally in an anime expo (he didnt notice that it was a fake because of the glossy plastic), put a thread on SGCafe to warn others about fake goods, but instead got flamed for being stupid enough to buy a fake.
When I read the comments, they reminded me heavily of the crap I read on STOMP. You know, STOMP, the website composed of mostly idiotic Singaporeans who see it as an avenue to flame random things. A lot of STOMP users are vivacious (noisy) and analytical (nitpicky) and are always ready to provide feedback (love flaming others on forums). The Singaporean society is kind of, restless. There are no social, economic, or political issues where people can direct their energies into. The result is a society which is always ready to make a big hoo-ha of whatever happens. Now think of families. And the number of families out there, man, wife, and their children. Then imagine normal family life. Now the Singapore society doesn't seem that bad huh. It's so hard for me to stereotype my own society, probably because its impossible in the first place.
And I'm still wondering what I'm going to do with my own life. My education is probably my greatest undoing, because being in RI makes you detached from the realities in society and life, which is so unlike people in poly and stuff, who probably have more realistic expectations of their lives.
